There is absolutely no doubt that the best way to control diabetes is through diet and exercise. With an almost unlimited number of choices, however, our perspective is that you need to start at a place that gives you the most chance of success. It just doesn't do you any good to choose a program that you won't follow because of ingrained habits.
For that reason, we've designed a highly-flexible program in which we help YOU determine the best starting point for YOURSELF. We're here to support you all the way as a coach, and are available at any time to answer your questions, but, in the final analysis, the choice has to be YOURS.
We also believe that the hardest part of being a diabetic is not finding good information or good advice, but finding a good support system to help you cope on a day-to-day basis. That's what our Self-Help Support Program is all about. We give you a convenient support system that is designed to operate over a long-term, regardless where you move or what other changes you make to your lifestyle.
Our program is FREE to join. There is NO COST and NO OBLIGATION. When you join, we assign you a PERSONAL COACH who will take you through a series of questions that helps identify your PROFILE as a diabetic or pre-diabetic. From that profile, we recommend a program to help you control your diabetes. We also pay for you to attend our Living Lean program from SelfHelpWorks, Inc.? on weight management developed jointly between SelfHelpWorks, Inc. and Herbalife, Inc. Finally, we help you fine tune the program based upon your likes or dislikes, so YOUR chance of SUCCESS is MAXIMIZED. For more information about the program, read on. The Exercise Program
In the ideal world, everyone would wake up in the morning, go to the gym, and implement a well-designed, controlled exercise program for a minimum of an hour a day, and if they didn't go to the gym, they'd be outside jogging or riding a bicycle. As a diabetic or pre-diabetic, we can't think of a more ideal way to begin your day. Unfortunately, this is not an ideal world.
Many people are diabetic because they have spent years not exercising. They've tried to start numerous times, but somehow it just doesn't work out. While it's important that diabetics or prediabetics do as much exercise as they can, our program does not require tons of exercise in order for you to succeed. In fact, there's one version of our program that has been used by tens of thousands of people to lose weight with walking as the only exercise.
No Pain, No Gain. No Way: Too many people think that exercise means lots of physical stress based on the principle, "No Pain, No Gain." It's just not true. Modern science has clearly shown that exercise is as much about brain as brawn. If you exercise properly, you can burn fat, quite literally, almost without sweating.
In our program, we will show you how to get beneficial exercise by doing no more than taking regular walks around your neighborhood or even at the mall, and by doing simple exercises in your home. If you want to do more, however, -- and we hope you do -- we'll show you how to get even more benefits by joining a gym and putting together a program based upon scientific aerobic and anaerobic principles. Basically, we'll show you how to exercise smart.
To understand our exercise philosophy in more detail, we recommend reading The Maffetone Method by Dr. Philip Maffetone, who developed a unique, low-stress, fitness training system that has been used since the early 1990s by tens of thousands of everyday people like you and me, by celebrities like motivational guru Anthony Robbins and singer Jame Taylor, and also by numerous world class triathletes, including 6-time Ironman World Champion Mark Allen.
As a diabetic or prediabetic, it's important that you design the most effective program you can to improve your conditioning. We help you understand the key principles of effective exercise, so you can design a program that gives you the maximum benefit based upon where YOU're at today. If that means walking around the mall and doing light exercises at home, that's great. It's also great if you join a gym, get a personal trainer, and do three days of cardio training and three days a weight lifting per week, all with a heart rate monitor, so your exercise is fully controlled.
The Diet
Which is more important: the exercise or the diet? We think it's the diet, which is not a weight loss program perse that you end, but a long-term strategy to develop healthy eating habits that will help you lose the weight you need to lose, and then maintain it. Without a good diet, all the exercise in the world won't keep your blood sugar under control. The amount that you exercise, however, will determine your dieting strategy. Exercise increases your metabolic rate, which helps you burn off fat faster and also helps you stave off cravings to eat in excess. The best way to describe it is that when small amounts of food are added at the proper time, your body becomes an efficient "engine" that works properly to burn fat without you getting hungry.
If You Can't Exercise Much:While there's no question that you should exercise as much as possible, if you cannot exercise, we have diet strategies that help you increase your metabolic rate using safe, natural dietary supplements, so that you can create the same type of "engine" effect as people who exercise regularly. If you use this strategy, you can effectively lose weight and control your blood sugar level. While you will not gain the aerobic or anaerobic benefits that can only come from exercise, you CAN take off dozens of pounds, which is critically important in controlling diabetes.
Our diet strategy also has a long-term component to it. After you've taken off the weight that you need to lose, we help you adjust your diet to a maintenance mode in which you increase your calories so your weight stays constant. In short, we help you lose the weight you need to and then we help you keep it off.
Finally, our program is PROVEN. We can put you in touch with people who have lost not just 5, 10 or 15 pounds, but 30, 40, or 50 pounds or more. We don't just have a bunch of ads with fake claims. We will PUT YOU IN TOUCH by telephone or email with REAL people who have LOST substantial amounts of WEIGHT and KEPT IT OFF.
Type 1 versus Type 2: Our diet/fitness program is designed primarily for Type 2 diabetics and prediabetics. Its underlying assumption is that the person who needs it is likely in his or her late 40s to early 60s, and has gradually accumulated enough body fat either to spark an onset of Type 2 diabetes or to be a strong candiate to do so. What if you have Type 1 diabetes? Can you still do the program? Yes, you can, especially if you have not been exercising regularly like you should.
Assuming that you do not have excess fat you want to burn off, however, you should increase the amount of calories in the diet to match a rate closer to what your body needs daily. To do this, please consult your physician or diabetic educator. As for the exercise program, building a strong aerobic base applies to everyone, regardless of your type of diabetes.
The Self-Help Support Program
The Self-Help Support Program is unbelievably simple. When you start a diet program, we assign you a PERSONAL COACH, who will work with you on a day-to-day basis as needed to help you implement the program successfully. You choose whether to use email, telephone, or a combination of the two. You receive their email addresses by email, and they receive yours, so you can work together to develop relationships that can help you over a period of years.
