We have searched around for diet software, and have found what we think is the best program on the market. It's name is Performance Diet Pro. We chose it primarily because of the way that it integrates the glycemic index into its diet, which is critical for diabetics.
Do You Need Diet Software?
It's a great question. We think the answer is that while diet software is not a necessity, it's close. A good diet software program can be an excellent educational and planning tool. The key criteria is that the software must be fairly easy to use, and it must provide comprehensive information on a wide range of foods, including the calories, protein/fat/carb/sugar breakdown, and glycemic index rating.
What Is The Glycemic Index?
As more research is done into diabetes, the more everyone is realizing that controlling diabetes is not just about keeping sugar out of your diet. It's also about controlling carbs. The glycemic index rates how carbohydrates are broken down into sugar. Foods with high glycemic index ratings break down very rapidly, while foods with low glycemic index ratings are broken down over a longer period of time. Diabetics should eat foods with a low glycemic index rating, and should avoid foods with a high rating.
As always, we don't want you to take our word for it. Please go to the Performance Diet Pro web site and do your own research. If you're looking for a tool to help you plan a long-term diet, this is the best one we've seen.
A Note About Purchasing
The software is published by Healthkeeper.com, and it is purchased through a software distribution company, RegSoft.com. In its product info, you'll see three versions of the software. One is download only for $39.95. The other is a CD-only version for $44.95. The third is a download and CD bundle version for $49.95. They're identical. The company, however, no longer supports the CD versions, so all you can purchase is the download version for $39.95.
